I was trying really hard to put up a video each day this week, but I won't be posting a video today. Sorry. I had my dad for a week to give my mom some respite and he went home on Tuesday so I took a day for myself. I was pretty tired yesterday and felt I just needed to have a break, from everything. A day to take care of me. So while I did make a card and film a video, I have yet to edit it.
BUT! I did have the pleasure of going to our local scrapbook store with my girlfriend a couple weeks ago. The Paper & Ink Boutique had an "Alcohol Inks" Class and as I have NEVER used real alcohol inks I had to go. My girlfriend was in the same boat, so we made it a "Girl's Night Out". The first background I made at the class was a total flop, but this one didn't turn out half bad. I felt it had somewhat of a "Galaxy" feeling to it. While at the class there was a discount on all "My Favorite Things" stamps so obviously I had to add the "Space Explorer" set to my stash of Non-Stampin' Up! goodies.
We even did a little gold foiling on the background before it dried while the ink was still tacky. I love the gold veining it created. I think I may be hooked on these inks! lol
I couldn't tell you what colors of alcohol ink I used on the background, as the store had some for us to use, but I can tell you what I did to create the card when I got home.
I happened to have some gold flakes from the Dollarama. I got a lifetime's worth of them for only $1.25 in both silver and gold. I had never used these before so I figured at that price I could afford to mess up.
So after a little research, I decided to use my Zig 2 way glue and a paintbrush to put some glue down on the planet. I knew the glue would work, but the tip was too big to get a perfect circle in the little craters, so I put some glue on the paper then applied it with an old paintbrush. the flakes are pretty foolproof. You lay down some glue (you should research what kind to use, as there are many but not all glues work) put the flakes on top. Then once dry you dust off the excess. I used my bead tray to contain the little flakes as they are SUPER LIGHT and want to go EVERYWHERE!
As you can see, I colored 2 planets, but the one on the left was just a test run. I wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing before I altered the one (on the right) I wanted to put on my card. If you look close, you can see that I couldn't get the glue perfectly in the crater, hence why I pulled out a paintbrush. I needed more precision.
When the planet was all done I fussy cut it out. I was really happy with the way it turned out. I colored up the little astronaut with my copics on Whisper White CS then fussy cut him out. I embossed the sentiment in gold, added a brad, then used some gold twine to create the "cord" that would be used to attach the astronaut to his ship. I matted the Yupo Paper with Gold Foil CS then placed it all on a Basic Black Card. I will list all the other supplies I used down below.
It just so happens this is going to be my Dad's Birthday card. Years ago he and my mom went to the Kennedy Space Station and he got a photo taken in an astronaut suit. You know the kind where you stand in front of a green screen, then they put your body into the actual final photo. Ya, that kind! lol
His birthday isn't until July, but let's just say I'm ahead of schedule on this one! haha
Question: Have you tried alcohol inks before? What's your favorite brand and colors?
